PERSONALITY,
Emma Pillsbury is the epitome of ‘innocence’. A result of being mysophobic, she is very reserved and very reluctant to take chances. She likes to be in complete control of her surroundings because she can never handle the unexpected. In fact, the unexpected frightens her; as does many things. Because she is so easily frightened, Emma also happens to be nervous on most occasions, always worried that something that could go wrong, would. Constantly on her toes, this leaves her to be somewhat awkward, and that combined with her shyness leaves her sitting on the sidelines a lot. She misses out on a plethora of opportunities because she is afraid to step out of her comfort zone, closing herself off in the process. Emma builds up a wall to protect herself and, in doing this, she ends up being very stubborn.
When it comes to her students, she has a level head and can pull from other experiences to help them through their problems with ease (and, if it’s something she can’t handle, there’s always the plethora of pamphlets in her office). When it comes to her own problems, on the other hand, Emma has absolutely no idea how to handle them. This is, perhaps, due to her naïve nature, but she sometimes deals with her own issues in childish ways. Her crush on Will Schuester, for example, started out with teenage-esque behavior on her part. Emma’s habit to hide from her problems rather than face them straight on and her inability to hurt someone else’s feelings also tend to get her into trouble, as displayed by her mistake of a relationship with Ken Tenaka.
Through everything, Emma is a sweet woman. She always has the best of intentions and is always very genuine. For her students and certain people, she has a large heart -- it simply takes some effort to get there.
HISTORY,
Emma was born into a quaint family; her parents, Andrew and Lauren and her brother, Steven, who is two years her junior. Andrew worked as a police officer (it’s suspected that this is where Emma’s love for watching local news sprouted) and Lauren worked as a stay at home mother, though had a handful of kids she babysat at the house to earn some extra money. The family lived quite comfortable in their small, Virginian town, the two children being raised in an extremely loving environment. They didn’t have a copious amount of money and so, in a quite cliché manner, their family values were always strong. Emma grew up feeling safe under the title of “daddy’s little princess” and always managed to be well behaved.
From a young age, she found a love for reading non-fiction books, finding the things they taught to be much more valuable than the mere morals found in the depths of a fictitious tale. After reading a career-based one dealing with the life of a dairy farmer, Emma eagerly took up the dream to one day live that same life. She found it absolutely fascinating. When she was eight years of age, it was apparent to her parents that this was one dream she wasn’t going to give up, and so the family took a tour of such a farm. It was everything she had imagined it to be and more, and by the end of the tour she was in quite high spirits. Steven, however, did not partake in her joy; immature and merely ten years of age, his maturity wasn’t quite as up to the standards of his younger sibling. He pushed Emma into a runoff lagoon, and to this day she is unable to forget the experience; not only did that end her dream, but it ended her comfort as well.
Her mysophobic habits started out severe right off the bat. She would take showers at least four times a day and scrubbed her hands until they were raw red. While Emma had always been a tidy child, she began to show OCD-like habits, always straightening things out in the house. That behavior, her parents came to understand and figured they would pass. What they found uncomfortable was the way their daughter had begun to isolate herself from her peers. Kids were filthy and out of control and Emma couldn’t handle that. Concerned, Andrew and Lauren sent their daughter to a therapist, and he became her confidant. While her phobia and OCD only got worse, he helped her to open up more to her peers and she continued to see him until he retired when she was twelve years old. That is when she began to aspire to be a guidance counselor. She couldn’t help her own problems but Emma certainly knew how to help others. She set out on a new career track and, quite obviously, kept that area of focus.
In the ninth grade, she befriended a young man by the name of ‘Andy’. He was shy, sweet and best of all, clean -- they instantly grew close, and he became a large part of her life. Emma always had a handful of friends but she never let anybody get close to her. He, however, had managed to get close and helped her get through the teasing in High School. When they were Seniors, they tried out a relationship and she was instantly used to his nice, respectful nature. He was her first relationship, first kiss (though not her first love, despite the fact that she thought he was at the time). At graduation, they had an amicable split, for Emma was attending a local college and Andy had plans to move out to Southern California. Though they vowed to keep in touch, they lost focus and moved on with their lives (though briefly held an “email relationship” once she had moved to Ohio -- it didn’t end too terribly well).
She went through the motions of college as best she could. She never partied and hardly associated with her roommates (who were always annoyed by her cleaning habits) and focused on her studies. For two years she landed a job at a small High School an hour or so away from her home town, and she found herself content. That was, of course, until it came to her attention that she needed a change. Steven married and moved with his wife, Angie, up to Maine (where they later birthed two children). At age twenty five, Emma moved to Lima, Ohio, becoming a guidance counselor at William McKinley.
That was where she met Will Schuester.
He started out as a good friend, someone to help make her transition to the state a little easier. He tipped her off about some of the troublemaker students and introduced her to the staff. It was an entire year after the move did she start to recognize feelings for him -- unfortunately, being only her second crush, Emma wasn’t sure how to revert out of teenage habits. She became infatuated with him, and was excellent at hiding it until her fifth year at McKinley, when their time together became a bit more intimate and frequent. They were best friends and he began to show signs that he returned her feelings, despite his marriage.
Unfortunately, upon learning about his wife’s “pregnancy”, Emma (annoyed and heartbroken) finally gave in to the beggings of one unsanitary Ken Tenaka. It wasn’t that she disliked him, but he seemed filthy and she felt no romantic feelings towards him. She had hopes that, perhaps, he would help discourage her feelings for Will (but that certainly didn’t work). One of her biggest regrets happened to be when she agreed to marry Ken -- despite the fact that she was dumped on her wedding day, the guilt and shame of the entire engagement (both due to who it was and her reasons for it) still hang over her head.
Simultaneously, Will Schuester’s marriage had fallen down the drain and he finally seemed to come to terms with his feelings for her. They dated for a brief period of time before Emma recognized patterns in their developing relationship that reflected in his failed marriage. They both agreed to end it and wait until his divorce was final, giving him time to “find himself”. Emma, at that point, began to see another therapist (though that didn’t last too terribly long). She was furious when she found out that Will had been “seeing other women” (I.E. Shelby Corcoran and April Rhodes) during their time apart, under the impression that they were both waiting for one another, and separated herself from him completely.
Emma began to date Carl Howe, her dentist, during that point in time and was quite content with him until Will confronted her in the hallway, declaring that he would fight for her. Still, despite her confusion, she continued to see Carl through the summer months and, as she enters her sixth year at McKinley, she is nervous to see how everything pans out (provided that Will decided to keep to his word).
