HISTORY,
elliot's mother and father had known each other for quite a while. they had gone to school together, fallen in love and then been the couple that everyone hoped would get married and live happily ever after. but that never happened. anna ( mother ) and mark ( father ) loved each other very much, so much even that mark proposed to anna and of course, she said yes. anna wanted children badly, hoping that if she had a child then she wouldn't have to hide the fact she wasn't too keen on her brother's son. or her brother, for that matter. mark on the other hand wasn't as keen on having children until they had been married for at least three years. it was a few months before their wedding, after being engaged for three years, when anna found out the news. she was pregnant. knowing that mark wouldn't like this news, she hid it from him until it got closer to the wedding. a few weeks before, anna told mark and he took it okay. thankfully, anna thought everything would be fine and that the wedding would go on and he'd love their child no matter what. it all went fine until the morning before the wedding. when she woke up to an empty bed and open wardrobes which were no longer full of hers and mark's clothes. just her own. she also realised her engagement ring wasn't on her finger anymore. there were no traces of mark anywhere. anna was alone with a baby on the way and she was scared. but she kept the baby, promising to herself that she would make him grow up to love and not leave.
nine months later and elliot was born. he was very close to his mother from the minute he was born. his first words were mommy and love. anna tried to keep him away from her brother and his son, jedediah, because she didn't want their influence on him. elliot's uncle was a drug dealer and anna knew jed would become the same strange minded boy his father had been then he was younger. elliot never bothered to ask why he couldn't see his cousin but soon grew to wonder why he didn't have a dad like jed did. anna often tried to avoid the topic of conversation but one night when she was putting elliot to bed, he demanded that she tell him where his father was. after the story of how they'd met and what he'd done, elliot gave his mother a big hug, telling her that he would never leave her like his father had. and that he didn't think she deserved it. from then on, he never asked about his father again. he didn't want to find mark and was happy to stay with his mother.
due to lack of money, anna had to make elliot go to a public school. he didn't mind it, he had a lot of friends because he was so easy to get on with and love. he was also a kind of pushover, too. as he grew up, he started to see that the friends he'd known since the start of school weren't as innocent as they once had been. they started using drugs and, although elliot had sworn he would never touch them, they told him he had to. said it was all part of being in their 'gang'. so, not wanting to be pushed away from the friends he'd known for a long time, he injected himself often. soon, he started to get very ill and his mother noticed this. she took his to the hospital where the doctors confirmed that he was hiv positive and that drugs had been in his system. anna was furious and heartbroken. she was furious because her son had broken his promise and she was heartbroken because she knew that eventually he would get very ill and there would be nothing she could do about it. elliot told her she didn't need to worry about him because he wouldn't give up. he told his school friends that he had hiv because of injecting himself and the rest of them stopped immediately, guilty because of what had happened to elliot. ellie was just glad that they'd stopped taking drugs and he was glad he'd made a difference.
he never gave up fighting, even though he knew it wouldn't do him much good. he knew he would get seriously sick one day and that his hiv would become aids. he wasn't scared, though. he just knew he had to keep trying and not giving up. the more he tried, the happier he felt and the less ill he became. he wasn't ashamed that he had hiv, but he was ashamed that he'd broken his promise to his mother and that he'd taken drugs. he started going to groups which helped him understand that it was no good dwelling on the past because what's done is done. elliot lives by that now, not depressed by the fact he has hiv but happy because of the fact he knows he isn't the only one who has to go through this. he has people he can turn to and that makes him know that giving up gets you nowhere.
